Warsaw Sabre Workshops 2024

We cordially invite you to a special event – Polish sabre workshops in Warsaw, taking place on three dates: October 20th, November 24th, and December 7th, 2024. After a long break, we are resuming a series of workshops focused on the reconstruction of 17th-century Polish sabre fencing, a unique element of Poland’s military heritage. These workshops offer an excellent opportunity to deepen your knowledge and skills, whether you're a beginner or an advanced fencing enthusiast.

Polish Sabre with Silkfencing – About the System

During the workshops, participants will have the opportunity to learn the unique system developed by Jerzy Miklaszewski, which is the result of many years of research into European martial arts. This system, based on a solid analysis of historical sources and tested in tournament settings, offers a distinctive approach to sabre fencing. Jerzy Miklaszewski has devoted years to studying the Polish fencing school, which has culminated in a system that combines tactical elements, specific cuts, and combat techniques described in old memoirs and other historical sources.

Polish Fencing Heritage

Sabre fencing had great significance in Poland, with its popularity crossing social class boundaries – soldiers, nobility, and even young boys were trained in its use. Many Western and native sources confirm the existence of a unique Polish school of fencing, including the so-called cross-cutting fencing, which traces its roots to medieval systems. This technique was developed over the centuries and became an important part of Poland’s military tradition.

It is worth noting that by the 17th century, sources already mentioned cross-cutting fencing, and the fencing systems of this period, including sabre fencing, were inspired by both Eastern and Western traditions.

Workshop Plan

The workshops will be divided into three main blocks, introducing participants to the intricacies of Polish sabre fencing:

  • Footwork and body mechanics – In the first stage, we will focus on the basics of movement, which form the foundation of effective sabre combat. The exercises will cover basic steps and proper body mechanics, essential for the correct execution of fencing techniques.

  • Cuts and parries – The next stage will involve learning the basic cuts and parries. Starting with simple blade movements, participants will gradually be introduced to more advanced techniques, including half-cuts, full cuts, and tactical sequences.

  • Application of techniques in combat tactics – At the end of the workshops, participants will have the opportunity to apply the learned techniques in simulated combat scenarios. Simple tactical situations will be introduced, allowing participants to understand how fencing techniques were used in real-life encounters.

Michał Starzewski and the Cut Sequences

During the workshops, the cut sequence according to Michał Starzewskiwill be presented. Although created in the 19th century, it is considered one of the most characteristic systems of Polish sabre fencing. This sequence, when placed in the context of 17th-century fencing, forms the foundation of teaching Polish sabre. Supplemented with sources from the 18th century, it is an authentic record of combat techniques and is closely linked to the historical actions of Polish fencers. Each participant will have the chance to practice these techniques, gaining an understanding of both their historical background and contemporary application.

Equipment

For the workshops, comfortable sports attire is sufficient, but for more advanced participants, it is recommended to bring your own equipment, such as a fencing mask, gloves, protective jacket, or your own sabre. Educational materials and practice weapons will be provided, but having your own gear will allow for a deeper understanding and faster assimilation of the techniques discussed.
